Season 1, Episode 1: Cooking the Books

In this first episode we are introduced to Bernard, the alcoholic irish book shop owner. But, Bernard has a problem. His taxes need doing, and there's no avoiding it. His accountant turns out to be a wanted felon, and no one seems to be willing to help him. His salvation is an exemption clause which exempts him from doing his tax under certain conditions. Fran is busy trying to discover what a particular item in her shop actually is whilst Manny, working as an accountant has an 'incident' with 'the little book of calm'.

Season 1, Episode 2: Manny's First Day

It's Manny's first day working at Black Books, Bernard's shop. Bernard is giving him a trial day, to see how he copes under the pressure. Bernard teaches Manny the exact opposite of everything he needs to know, and leaves him with the shop. Tragically, he manages to sell mostly all of the books in the shop. Much to Bernard's disgust; seriously threatening his job at Black Books.

Season 1, Episode 3: The Grapes of Wrath

Bernard and Manny are asked to house-sit for a friend, and decide to do so when a professional cleaner comes in to re-new Black Books. With a cellar full of wine, 10 bottles of which are priceless, Bernard and Manny have the most expensive drinking binge you'll ever see.

Season 1, Episode 4: The Blackout

Manny overdoses on coffee and cop shows after getting an espresso machine for his birthday and is mistaken for a policeman after attempting to thwart a pursesnatching. Fran and Bernard gradually exchange embarassing stories about injuries they sustained the previous day.

Fran runs into an old flame whose voice stirs up confusing feelings.

Season 2, Episode 1: The Entertainer

Fran buys a piano and starts taking lessons, discovering she has no talent whatsoever - meanwhile Bernard falls in love and tries desperately to impress her. Between them, they con Manny into throwing away a hard-earned break to help them out.

Season 2, Episode 6: A Nice Change

Bernard and Manny can't hear themselves argue because the shop next door is undergoing some round-the-clock construction. The noise drives Bernard, Manny and Fran up the wall. So Fran suggests a holiday. Bernard and Manny find baggage in her luggage. There's nothing in the crisp packet and Manny's pants aren't that easy to fold. Will the customer crack the system? What happens on the riverboat? Just how many monkeys are missing in Canada?

Fran returns from a vacation in Cornwall to discover Manny has resigned and Bernard is living amongst piles of his own filth and dead badgers. Manny has taken up work at the new bookstore next to Black Books, where he must contend with a new, and possibly even more demanding manager.

When Manny's parents arrive however, the duo are forced to corroborate some slightly embellished details from Manny's letters home.
